چکیده

1 Wallaba (Eperua falcata) is a tropical wood which is known to have naturally low swelling 2 characteristics. Samples of wallaba heartwood were subjected to differential solvent 3 extraction. Wood pieces that were extracted with methanol experienced significantly higher 4 swelling after rehydration from oven dry to 96% relative humidity in comparison to non-5 extracted samples and samples extracted with other solvents. Methanol soluble wallaba 6 heartwood extract was purified by high pressure liquid chromatography and the compounds 7 present were characterised by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Methanol extract was 8 found to contain a very high relative proportion of polar compounds which are proposed to 9 bind to the polymeric cell wall by multiple hydrogen bonds restricting the association of water 10 and therefore acting as natural anti-swelling agents. 12 13 Introduction 14 Wood cellulose is organized in crystalline networks of nanofibres coated by hemicellulose 15 macromolecules and then by lignin. In the cell walls, the organization of these layers of fibre 16 composite and the orientation of those fibres are determining factors of hygroscopic 17 properties (Skaar 1988). Water induces dimensional variations in wood and it is present in 2 18 mains forms; commonly called " bound water " or " free water ". Bound water is either 19 intimately associated into the lignocellulosic network or associated onto wood cell wall 20 through hydrogen bonding; in the latter case this is termed " water of saturation " or " water of 21 surface absorption. " Free water, sometimes termed " interstitial water, " is contained in cell 22 lumens when the fibre saturation point is exceeded (approximately 30% wood moisture 23 content). The absorbtion or desorption of free water does not influence swelling of wood 24

Acetylation of wood – A review

Wood is a porous three dimensional, hydroscopic, viscoelastic, anisotropic bio-polymer composite composed of an interconnecting matrix of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin with minor amounts of inorganic elements and organic extractives. Some, but not all, of the cell wall polymer hydroxyl groups are accessible to moisture and these accessible hydroxyls form hydrogen bonds with water. As the...

Relationship between wood color parameters measured by the CIELab system and extractive and phenol content in Acacia mangium and Vochysia guatemalensis from fast-growth plantations.

The heterogeneity of color distribution between sapwood and heartwood limits the market for wood from fast-growth plantations of tropical species. Wood color is associated with wood extractives contents. This study presents the relationship between wood color parameters measured by the CIELab color system and total amount of extractives and phenolic-type extractives in ethanol-toluene and hot w...

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the potential of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) bark and knot extractives to function as preservative chemicals. Scots pine was chosen to due to its importance in Finland; bark and knots were chosen due to their high extractives content and lack of industrial applications. The bark and knots of Scots pine were extracted with acetone and the extr...

Lipophilic extractives in process waters during manufacturing of totally chlorine free kraft pulp from eucalypt wood.

The chemical composition of lipophilic extractives from process waters throughout a totally chlorine free (TCF) bleaching sequence after kraft pulping of eucalypt wood has been studied. These compounds are among the most problematic wood constituents for both TCF and zero liquid effluent (ZLE) processes, since they tend to accumulate in circuits resulting in the formation of the so-called pitch...

of Wood Surface Energy to Surface Composition

The wood cell wall is composed of cellulose, lignin, hemicelluloses, and extractives. Thus, the surface energy of the wood material must be some combination of the surface energies of these components. The influence of extractives on wood surface chemistry can be important in diverse industrial applications, such as coating, pulping, and wood-based composites. In this study, pine wood meal was ...

Chinese Tallow Tree (sapium Sebiferum) Utilization: Characterization of Extractives and Cell-wall Chemistry

Wood, bark, and the wax-coated seeds from Chinese tallow tree (Sapium sebiferum (L.) Roxb. syn. Triadica sebifera (L.) Small), an invasive tree species in the southeastern United States, were subjected to extractions and degradative chemical analyses in an effort to better understand the mechanism(s) by which this tree species aggressively competes against native vegetation, and also to facilit...
